Interview: Airbnb Design: Neala and Travis of Buddina Beach House
Firstly, tell us about yourselves!
We have lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2009, I am a Doctor, and Travis is a plumber. We have 2 sons and a border collie who all love living so close to the beach.
Did you design the home, or work with an architect/interior designer?
We designed the home with our very clever local draftsman, Bradley from Icon Design. We were very involved in the design, right from the start. We had spent almost 15 months living in the original house on the property so we got to appreciate the views and where all of the beautiful light comes in as we were designing which helped when trying to position our main spaces. The interior and the landscaping are all Travis and I, we didn’t use a designer for any of the steps
Did you DIY anything yourself or did you hire professionals for certain tasks?
Travis did all of the plumbing for the house, but the rest we had professionally done. We did all of the landscaping and gardening, including the luscious zoysia grass that has people stopping us all the time and asking if it is fake! We have just added on a downstairs, self-contained studio that will eventually be a stand-alone Airbnb (when the house itself isn’t rented out) and we have done a lot of that work ourselves.
What was your vision when designing the Budina Beach House?
Buddina Beach House is a coastal entertainers home. It is a beautiful space but it is a space that can be lived in. The house was designed around making the most of the white water beach views and around entertaining. It is our forever home, one that we plan on never leaving but hope to Airbnb it out for part of every year.
What was your favorite part of the Airbnb design process?
We enjoyed absolutely every part of designing the house, we miss it now that the process is complete and are looking for another project to get stuck into!
How did you gather inspiration and narrow down your Airbnb design choices?
We’ve renovated a coastal home before, on a much smaller scale, so felt confident in our design. However, we take a lot of inspiration from the Australian renovating trio “Three Birds Renovations”
Your home recently won the 2021 Master Builders QLD Sunshine Coast House of the Year! How did that feel to win?
We were already so in love with how the house turned out, and knew that it was a show stopper but to win the award, really was the cherry on top!
What extra amenities or Airbnb design touches do you provide that guests have appreciated the most?
The top floor is a treat for a master couple. It is an adult’s retreat with its bar, deck, and master ensuite. Being married to a plumber, the bathroom is extra special. There are 4 showerheads in the ensuite alone, with a skylight over the shower and views of the sunset over Buderim Mountain. If you are staying with little ones, there are plenty of games and even a little cubby door between the two rooms that kids love crawling through over and over again!
What does your ideal weekend spent in Buddina, Queensland look like?
The house is only 60 meters from the front door to having your feet in the waves, that is 100% the best part about staying at Buddina Beach House. It is perfectly located an easy hour’s drive from Brisbane, and 10 mins to Mooloolaba’s famous beaches and restaurants. And only 45 minutes from Noosa. The mild Sunshine Coast weather is perfect in winter, where you can lay in bed and watch the whales pass by as they migrate. There is a large shopping center within walking distance for all necessary supplies. The Kawana Surf Club is 400 meters from the house and the beachfront foreshore areas surrounding the house are dotted with barbeques and parks. A short 2.5km trip north is the beautiful Point Cartwright, which boasts, good surf, rock pools to explore, and river frontage to paddle in if calm water is more your style. There are so many activities nearby, climbing Mount Coolum, the Bli Bli water park, and also Aussie World and Australia Zoo.
Where are your favorite spots for guests to relax at The Buddina Beach House?
We have three large decks and a double-sided fireplace which means you can enjoy the house year-round. The magnesium pool can be seen from the kitchen and the two Eastern facing decks, so you can watch the kids play whilst you entertain, or have a coffee or wine and unwind. There is a hanging chair outside that is perfect for curling up in and reading a book.

Andrea was really helpful with crafting my listing description and making sure that I could get the features of the house that I wanted to share to be beautifully highlighted. She helped me make the whole listing more personable and that was really helpful.
