DIY Raining Cloud Sensory Toy

This adorable DIY cloud toy with raining ribbons and a sweet smile is sure to become a favorite for the baby you make it for. The soft sensory ribbons are perfect for little hands to explore and play, making this a lovely baby shower gift or a sweet project for your baby’s nursery. You can even embroider the baby’s name on the back of the cloud for an extra-special, keepsake touch.

I tested a few different versions of the pattern and ultimately settled on the one linked below—it’s the easiest to turn after sewing and the most comfortable size for babies to hold.

Tip: Be sure to use a high-quality Merino wool felt. Not only does it hold its shape beautifully, but it also gets softer with time.

• This polka dot set of ribbons
• 2 pieces of white Merino wool felt
• Craft stuffing
• Embroidery floss set with needles
• White thread
• Sewing machine
• Optional : A baby Safe bell for a little jingle

Step 1: Lay out the cloud pattern on the felt and cut out 2 pieces.

Lay the cloud pattern on the felt and cut out two pieces.

Embroider the face.
Using a double thickness of black thread, embroider the face onto one cloud piece. This is a great moment to personalize the expression or add the baby’s name to the back for a keepsake touch.

Arrange the ribbons.
To line up the ribbons without measuring, place the center ribbon first, followed by one ribbon on each side.

Continue adding the remaining ribbons, spacing them naturally until the bottom edge feels balanced.

Once you have the ribbons in place, turn them up to the inside and pin. Sew a couple lines close to the bottom edge,  across these ribbons to secure them very well to the felt (so baby can’t pull them off)

Sew the cloud.
Place the second piece of felt on top, right sides together, and sew around the edge of the cloud, leaving about a 2.5-inch opening for turning. If you’d like to hang the cloud, you can add a small loop at the top using ribbon or elastic  (I used a piece of metallic elastic in the photo)

Turn and stuff.
Turn the cloud right side out and use a pencil or chopstick to gently push out the curves. Add the stuffing until the cloud feels soft but lightly plush. If you’re including a bell, nestle it safely inside before closing.

Finish the cloud.
Hand-sew the opening closed. Your cloud is now finished and ready to be a sweet, handmade keepsake for your baby.

If you want your cloud to be extra cute (yes it’s possible!) add rosy cheeks with a bit of pink felt cut into circles and stitched on.
